The Sundrop College Ready Toolkit: the covers of its five PDFs, with Starting College With Confidence in the centre, and the First Semester Command Center spreadsheet on a tablet

Who it's for

Parents and families preparing a first-year student to live on campus. Commuters, transfer students and students in campus apartments can use the parts that fit: the timeline, readiness checks, budget, paperwork and first-week sections apply to most students.

By the end, you'll have

  • A move-in timeline you've worked through, with paperwork, permissions and the health-insurance waiver checked off.
  • One spending limit, one item list and one packing plan, so nothing is bought twice or forgotten.
  • A roommate agreement and a written plan for move-in day, the goodbye and the first night.
  • A clear picture of the real cost after aid, and the questions to ask before anyone signs for a loan.
  • A spreadsheet the student uses to run classes, deadlines and money from week 2 of the first semester.

Starting late? The main guide has a "Start Where You Are" page that tells you what to do first if move-in is 8, 4 or even 1 week away.

How the resources work together

Read first
Resource 1

Plan

Starting College With Confidence lays out the whole move: the timeline, who owns which job, readiness checks, the goodbye and the first week. It tells you when to reach for each of the other resources.

12–9 weeks out
Resource 2

Shop, budget, pack

The Shop, Budget + Pack Workbook gives every item one status letter that follows it from the shopping list to the packed car.

Final weeks
Resources 3–4

Move in

Roommate Ready covers shared space, money and conflict. The Move-In Day Command Center covers the last 72 hours, unloading, setup and the first night.

Week 2 onward
Resource 6

First semester

The First Semester Command Center spreadsheet hands day-to-day organizing to the student: classes, deadlines, spending and a weekly reset.

College Funding (Resource 5) supports every stage of your planning. Use it whenever you’re reviewing college costs, financial aid, or loan decisions—even before the 12-week preparation timeline begins.

Honest expectations

What it does

Puts the whole move to college in one order, with checklists and worksheets so the family and the student know who is doing what, and when.

What it doesn't do

It doesn't replace your college's own instructions. Housing rules, deadlines and billing dates from the school always come first, and the guide shows you where to check them.

About the loan information

Federal loan rules were checked against U.S. Department of Education sources in October 2026. Rules can change each year, so the guide marks them and shows where to confirm them before borrowing.

Questions

Is this for the parent or the student?

Both. The guides are written for parents and students to use together. The roommate workbook and the first-semester spreadsheet are meant to be led by the student.

Move-in is only a few weeks away. Is it too late?

No. The main guide's "Start Where You Are" page tells you what to do first if move-in is 8 to 5 weeks, 4 to 2 weeks, or one week or less away.

What do I receive?

One ZIP download containing five PDFs (130 pages in all) and the First Semester Command Center spreadsheet.

Can I print the PDFs?

Yes. The PDFs are designed to print on US Letter paper. The spreadsheet is for typing into on a computer.

Does it tell us which loan or lender to choose?

No. The College Funding guide helps you understand the gap, the loan types and the questions to ask. The decision stays with your family, and the guide points you to StudentAid.gov and your school to confirm current rules.
